Bernardo Fleming

Bernardo Fleming is the head of the Olfactive Design Studio (ODS) at International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF). As a fairly young department for IFF, Bernardo was one of the pioneers responsible for the strategic vision of the department. Today he is responsible for evolving the function and bringing to life new fragrance solutions that capture emotion into functional products for the FMCG industry. He is based out of the Creative Centre in Hilversum in The Netherlands.

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bernardo has been working over the last 14 years within the fragrance industry, developing a unique and fresh approach to fragrance creative process. He combines a strong strategic vision with innovative thinking, endless curiosity, a keen eye for market trends and aesthetic expressions.

Bernardo has worked across a wide spectrum of projects with varied priorities; from developing innovative fragrance delivery systems for the laundry products, to designing signature scents for brands or forecasting olfactive trends. His most recent collaborations with artist and designers gave him the opportunity to bring the olfactive dimension in a novel manner to Tate Britain, Rijks Museum in London and London Design Festival.

Scents of elements from the island

I have created a personal collection of all the iconic memoirs from my life, recreated as precise and vivid as they are in my memory. From the diesel fuel of the engines in the garage of my grandfather, to the warm hug my mother gave me everyday when coming back to work, to polo ralph lauren which was the first fine fragrance i got in my life ( also smell of other first things). Smells is a poetic way of getting to know someone not judged by looks or any form of prejudice.

Collaboration with photographer.

1. Matching images with scents. The lead sense will define the theme (linked to mythology, history or elements from the island) the complementary sense should stimulate in complementary way.

2. Portraits of old people and young people, local and newcomers/ tourists. ( ask the about a smell of childhood or favourite scent) and have the images displayed in carrafes with the scents.
